The Broadmeadows Specialist Family Violence Court (SFVC) is one of 13 courts of its kind in Victoria designed for the physical and emotional safety of affected families.
A design team from our Public sector is contributing to four of these vital, fully accessible projects in Shepparton, Geelong, and Sunshine as well as Broadmeadows.
The common thread through all this work is sensitive, integrated architecture and interior design supporting visitors, staff and the judiciary.
At the same time, each project features a unique design connecting it to both context and community.
A civic place in tune with context and community
The Broadmeadows project incorporates a number of functions critical to the delivery of SFVC services, all arranged around and integrated with the existing building on site.
Located at the corner of the main courts site, the new building is a cohesive addition that embraces the street edge and surroundings to form part of the civic realm.
The height and materiality of the architecture also contribute to a unified courts precinct.
A functional ‘ribbon’ façade
The north western façade of the building is wrapped with an undulating ‘ribbon’ which pulls away from the façade to create new entrances and secure spaces.
This architectural device creates both a private courtyard for the safe waiting area and a sheltered entry.
The SFVC’s textured cladding lends weight and solidity to the building while also responding to the concrete and bluestone of existing structures. The linear texture references the stonework of significant public buildings across Melbourne.
