Barangaroo Station is a landmark new underground railway station for Sydney, designed by Foster + Partners with Architectus as the executive architect on the project.
Situated at the northern edge of Barangaroo, the station is part of the Sydney Metro network, providing a vital connection to the emerging harbourside precinct of Barangaroo. The growing precinct incorporates residential, commercial and entertainment areas and a new ferry hub.
The station also provides access to the Walsh Bay Arts and Culture precinct.
A welcoming, intuitive place for passengers
Barangaroo station embodies Sydney Metro’s commitment to a customer-first approach.
The spacious underground station, located approximately 20 metres below street level, is welcoming and intuitive. Its simplicity and clarity are designed to make the station safe and comfortable for everyone to use.
The architecture is defined by tall, generous spaces that allow for clear sightlines and provide a sense of movement. Passengers are guided effortlessly from the entrance lifts and escalators to the concourse, through the gatelines, and down to the platforms.
The extensive use of split-face local sandstone for the walls establishes a unique identity for the station and reflects the natural landscape of Barangaroo.
The sandstone is complemented by vitreous enamel, aluminium, and stainless-steel finishes, along with white terrazzo flooring.
Designed and built for longevity
Longevity has been a guiding principle in the design, with a 100-year lifespan for all structural elements and a 50-year lifespan for fixtures and cladding.
This commitment ensures that Barangaroo Station will serve the community for generations to come.
Adding to the station’s unique character is an installation of steel and copper trees by artist Khaled Sabsabi, titled “In Time We Shall,” serving as a memory of the landscape that once occupied the site.
One of the most significant urban renewal projects in Sydney, Barangaroo has more than 7,000 years of history and stories to tell, with the land’s Traditional Custodians, the Gadigal, using the area for hunting, fishing, canoeing, and swimming, while its foreshore was a gathering place.
Along with delivering Barangaroo Station, Architectus is part of the First Nations-led AKIN design team working on Barangaroo Harbour Park – a new, world-class open space on Sydney’s waterfront.
A 21st century network
In addition to Barangaroo, Architectus and Foster + Partners developed reference designs for Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Gadigal, and Waterloo, in conjunction with the NSW Government. Our practices were engaged by Sydney Metro as part of the METRON Consortium, with Mott MacDonald and Arcadis as project lead and engineering design.
A new standalone railway, this 21st century network will deliver more than 65 kilometres of new metro rail, revolutionising the way Sydney travels.
