The expansion of our Sydney Studio was an opportunity to put our values into action, designing a truly collaborative and innovative workplace while reducing our carbon footprint to support our ambitious sustainability goals.
The Workplace interiors team at Architectus channelled all their creativity and expertise into a workplace that genuinely reflects who we are as designers.
Our growing studio fosters collaboration, creativity, and a sense of community, serving as a ‘culture carrier’ for our approach to architecture and design.
A flexible, open space designed for daily interaction
In practical terms, the studio expansion gave us the extra space we needed as a growing practice, now accommodating up to 240 people within an agile neighbourhood model, organised around project typologies.
Taking up an additional floor in our Harry Seidler building at 25 Martin Place, we connected the two levels with a mass timber stair that sits lightly within the open-plan layout.
Drawing on a simplified palette of locally sourced plywood, cork flooring and modular joinery, we carefully considered every detail, forming a backdrop to purposeful spaces that flex. These include day-to-day settings like a collab hub, gathering places for large groups, a showcase space, and workshopping zones.
A lower carbon footprint
Our low carbon strategy for the Sydney Studio renewal achieved excellent results, saving more than 100,600 kgs of CO2-e.*
We reduced our upfront embodied carbon by more than 60 per cent compared to the average Sydney fit out.
How did we do it? By paring back as much as possible, re-using or choosing materials with low embodied carbon and minimising interventions within the built environment.
