Architectus has delivered twin facilities at Melbourne and Brisbane airports as part of the most complex transformation of air traffic management in Australian aviation history. The program, known as OneSKY, is a partnership between Airservices and the Department of Defence which has replaced existing air traffic management systems with an advanced integrated system known as the Civil Military Air Traffic Management System (CMATS).

Contracted under Arup, Architectus designed the new Air Traffic Service Centres (ATSC) each comprising Control Operations Room, Building Services Centre, equipment rooms, power plants, chiller plants and car parking facilities. Systems were designed with 2N+1 redundancy, the highest form of data centre redundancy which provides a completely paralleled backup system along with additional components to account for failure and maintenance in each system.

The Air Traffic Control Operations Rooms are key spaces in each facility. The 1600 m2 operations floors seamlessly integrate sophisticated airspace management technology in an environment conducive to calm focus. Designed with both function and simplicity in mind, much consideration was given to providing optimal ergonomic, acoustic and visual comfort to staff occupying these spaces. As they are responsible for monitoring over 10 per cent of the world’s airspace, they require an environment that allows for high-level focus without distraction.

The ATSCs represent a deeply considered response to a highly technical project brief; they support more efficient air services, cater for future air traffic growth and enhance our national security.
