Located on the prominent corner of Flinders Street and Spencer Street in central Melbourne, we have designed an upmarket hotel comprising 280-guest rooms, function, health and wellness facilities, ground level lobby lounge and bistro and top-level restaurant and bar.
The tower is a refined lozenge-form, with the addition of a simple arc to the east and west aspects. At the top, the tower form is simplified where the parapet is entirely horizontal. The sweep of the tower form above is expressed at ground level, the podium form remains for the most part as a block, to the southern edge, the form steps down to align with the parapet of the adjacent YHA building.
Inspiration from the horizontal fenestration rhythm of the existing historic masonry buildings is articulated at the podium level with open frame glass and reinforced concrete. This articulation enhances the sense of a permeability, visually referencing connections to the locality.
The podium sought opportunities to increase urban activation and green spaces, outdoor terraces enhance and encourage the public into the ground floor space.
