Designed to support and adapt to the shifting nature of contemporary work, 475 Church Street is an authentic, purpose-driven commercial development in the bustling inner-city suburb of Richmond in Melbourne.
Architectus designed the 10-storey, mixed-use building following the success of the neighbouring Industry Lanes development.
Though it has its own distinct architectural expression, this new development was conceived with a similar ethos to Industry Lanes, emphasising connectivity and community through a building designed for true hybrid work.
We were briefed to create a commercial building containing mixed mode or terrace areas that would appeal to tenants while also placing a priority on Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) and high-quality amenities.
Inspired by in-between spaces
Spaces within the development are thoughtfully designed and organised for connectivity, with our team drawing inspiration from convergent, in-between spaces such as attics, mezzanines and laneways.
Diversity of scale is emphasised through a stepped podium design that acknowledges the larger scale of Industry Lanes but reduces to a more intimate, welcoming scale on the southern side. This podium will also give rise to more interesting internal and external spaces.
Three lofts break up mass across the site, with the entire development echoing the industrial undertone of the area in a contemporary way. Materials will also reflect this blend of the past and the future.
