The brief for 201 Kent Street was to create a more connected and visible lobby space where tenants and visitors could gather to meet and collaborate. The original lobby had changed little since the building’s completion in the mid-1980s, was inward-looking and lacked the sense of arrival.
Our design solution extends the space to the west opening up views to the historic Grafton Bond building and Barangaroo beyond. Increasing the ceiling height to 8 metres creates greater visibility and presence to the street and a new cafe provides activation and amenity for tenants.
The design embraces the rectilinear form of the original shell, using an enduring and restrained palette of natural materials including Roman travertine, granite and American oak.
The podium has been extended to the boundary at Kent Street and the old facade replaced with a contemporary high performance structural glazing system to draw natural light in.
Further enhancements to the lobby include integrated co-working space, event and meeting room and shared kitchen and break-out facilities.
