Architectus and Ingenhoven Associates have designed a signature tower combining a vibrant public realm with a state-of-the-art future workplace.
Located on Melbourne’s eclectic Flinders Lane, the A-Grade building, designed to achieve 5.5 Star NABERS and 5 Star Green Star ratings, will adjoin the heritage-listed Shell House No. 1 Spring Street, an award-winning late modernist office tower designed by Harry Seidler.
Creating an inviting public plaza
Working with Harry Seidler & Associates, the existing underutilised forecourt will be reinterpreted into an inviting public plaza. Another internal courtyard will link the existing modernist Tower 1 with the proposed Tower 2.
The seamless transition between the external and internal plazas extends the public realm into the heart of the development, drawing people through to Flinders Street.
The public realm will be further activated through the integration and renovation of the adjacent art nouveau Milton House with new retail frontage, landscaped seating and a sheltered tree canopy.
Respecting its heritage ‘neighbours’
The tower’s massing and shape respect the existing heritage buildings.
The sculpted form not only retains Milton House as a legible, standalone element but also features it as an important contributor to the fine-grain nature of the streetscape.
The tower’s form also optimises view sharing and legibility of Tower 1 from Flinders Lane and the surrounding context.
