School design recognised by VIC government

We are absolutely delighted that one of our education projects has been recognised for design excellence by the Victorian state government at the 2020 Victorian School Design Awards.

New Schools 2020 – Lucas Primary has won the Best Primary School Award.

Lucas Primary School in Ballarat is one of the New Schools 2020 projects delivered by the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA), led by Architectus with K2LD and DesignInc.

Principal and National Education Sector Leader, Mark van den Enden said, “We are delighted to win the Best Primary School Award which reflects a fantastic collaboration with the VSBA, K2LD, and DesignInc.

Schools are such an important part of the community and we are delighted that our work has been recognised for its innovation. We are so looking forward to seeing students enjoy their new school, parents connecting as part of a new community in Ballarat and teachers shaping, delighting, and inspiring the minds of many.”

The warm, welcoming and engaging learning environments at the School have been carefully crafted to help teachers facilitate continuous, connected and collaborative learning experiences for every child.

The gabled roof of the administration and library building creates a welcoming arrival experience for children and their families as they proceed to their Learning Neighbourhoods. Each Learning Neighbourhood houses two separate learning communities, which share centrally located amenities and handwash zone. The learning community environments comprise nine purposefully designed learning settings including; a presentation space; small rooms for meetings and learning support; zones for collaboration; reading nooks; and dedicated spaces for wet and messy activities.

A Performing Arts and Physical Education (PAPE) building; a standalone Specialist Pavilion with facilities for art, science and food preparation; the Library; and children’s amenities can all be separately secured for community use after hours. Critically, during periods of peak enrolment, the Specialist Pavilion also provides equitable access to specialist facilities for children working in relocatable buildings, which do not have integrated specialist facilities.

The Victorian School Design Awards are for state government school projects and celebrate the role architects and designers play in providing innovative, creative and practical schools for Victorian students.

Congratulations to all the team.
