Macquarie University shortlisted for Australian Interior Design Award
The Architectus designed Macquarie University 1 Central Courtyard Building has been shortlisted for an Australian Interior Design Award in the Public Design category.
The Central Courtyard embodies the collective cultural memory from Macquarie University’s origins. Our true purpose was to restore a ‘beating heart’ to the campus and elevate it to stand among the greats. 1 Central Courtyard, a vibrant four-storey building for teaching, learning and events, generates a thriving campus experience.
The new Hub replaces an existing building and will provide a range of flexible learning and teaching spaces, food and beverage venues, multi-purpose and graduation halls, and associated amenities.
Designed as a progressive and exciting contemporary building, without overt references to its Brutalist neighbours, the building form comprises a matrix of narrow, light-filled floor plates with a permeable skin, allowing views into the active spaces and views out to the beauty of the Central Courtyard Precinct’s landscaped setting.
The vertical circulation core is highly visible from the Courtyard and from most places within the building. The two internal light courts and the stair tower combine to form a contiguous, visually open volume.
The Australian Interior Design Awards recognise and celebrate interior design excellence via a credible, industry-based program, which is backed by the Design Institute of Australia, the professional body representing Australian designers.
This year’s awards and commendations will be revealed at a gala presentation dinner on Friday 17 June 2022 at Sydney’s Hyatt Regency.
