Macquarie University: Institution of the Year
Following the Architectus-designed transformation of Macquarie University’s campus, the University has been recognised by the Tertiary Education Facilities Management Association (TEFMA) with a Clever Campus Award for Institution of the Year 2021.
The TEFMA Clever Campus Awards recognise, celebrate, and promote the outstanding achievements of the tertiary education community including institutions, teams, and individuals.
With Macquarie University ranked among the 1% top universities in the world, Architectus had the rare opportunity to work in close collaboration with a university exploring the future of campus life after designing the competition-winning concept for Macquarie University’s transformative Central Courtyard Precinct in 2016.
In the years since our education design team has been immersed in the process of finding inventive solutions that reflect the identity and functional requirements of Macquarie University as it looks to the future.
The collaboration has resulted in award-winning and innovative buildings and spaces, including the Central Courtyard Precinct grounds and buildings 1 Central Courtyard (The Hub), R1/R2 Student Accommodation, and the adaptive re-use of The Lincoln Building’s internal spaces and creation of a new retail promenade (façade by AR-MA). This multi-faceted portfolio also encompasses signature buildings Incubator and Ainsworth Building along with short-term and experimental spaces, culminating in a forward-thinking educational precinct that will adapt and evolve with the University for years to come.
Architectus Principal, Luke Johnson said “It has been a great privilege and responsibility for Architectus to advise Macquarie University across multiple projects – modest and significant – to realise transformational and enduring outcomes for their clever campus. Our collaboration with the University involved extensive community engagement, strategic project phasing and decanting, and the application of many thousands of informed design decisions to maintain continuous campus operability, support future adaptability and ultimately create a series of enduring and inspiring legacies for the university community.”
