Brookfield Place Sydney receives international praise

We are thrilled to share Brookfield Place Sydney designed by Make Architects and Architectus for Brookfield Properties has received an Urban Land Institute (ULI) Asia Pacific Award for Excellence.

Brookfield Place has transformed an entire precinct of Sydney’s CBD – one that was previously seen as a mixed bag of tired buildings with an underground rabbit warren of pedestrian links. The scheme has focused on retaining, upgrading, and adapting the elements that can be sustainably restored while adding new-build assets to prioritise people and integrate connectivity into and around the building and its city context.

It has significantly improved public infrastructure, restored a critical heritage building, renewed public walkways, and created outstanding commercial and retail spaces.

Delivered by Brookfield Properties, the development has secured its premium brand status, ‘Brookfield Place’. Brookfield awards this to a select group of best-in-class precincts globally that deliver on a strict range of criteria, from state-of-the-art building systems to leading sustainability credentials and curated placemaking activities. Just five other Brookfield Places exist in the world.

The design won an international design competition as the only scheme to successfully respond to the brief by amalgamating the multiple uses, site boundaries and heritage buildings, as well as delivering a new pedestrian route connecting George Street to Carrington Street and bringing Wynyard Park back into the wider Sydney experience.

Recognition of excellence in land use practice has long been a guiding principle of the ULI, leading to the creation of the ULI Global Awards for Excellence programme in 1979, and the launch of an Asia Pacific competition in 2019. The programme is today widely recognised by the development community as one of its most prestigious awards.
