Suburban Rail Loop concepts for Monash Station revealed

The Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA) has released details of the design of the new station proposed for Monash as part of the Suburban Rail Loop East (SRL East) due to be opened by 2035. SRL will be a 90km metro line comprising 13 stations and Architectus lead the design of all six stations to be rolled out for SRL East as well as the Linewide Design Strategy for all the future stations.

Architectus has been working within the AJM Consortium (Aurecon, Jacobs, Mott McDonald) together with the SRLA to develop the Concept and Reference Design and SRL East Business Case, which was released by the Victorian Government at the end of August. SRL East runs between Cheltenham and Box Hill, and Monash will be a major station halfway between that will greatly improve access to world-class education, health, and research facilities and deliver important public transport connections to the Monash National Employment and Innovation Cluster (NEIC), the largest employment and innovation hub outside of Melbourne’s CBD.

The design is highly user-centred, focusing both on passengers and the growing community that will develop around the station. It features inviting generous, public space surrounding the station entrances, which lead to an intuitive, light-filled concourse, and at the platforms, screen doors will enhance passenger safety and help to make the stations more sustainable. The station surroundings will include an integrated interchange for bus services, improvements to local roads, and a commitment to cycle networks and active transport.

SRL East will run through Melbourne’s suburbs and mark the first tier of a major expansion and reshaping of Melbourne’s suburban public transport network. As well as connecting to all the major radial train lines, it will improve local access to public transport and shorten travel times for locals commuting to suburban workplaces, schools, universities, local shops and services, and the airport.

The Station and Linewide Designs are led by Architectus Principal, Andrew Shields, who is also Project Principal on the detail design of Sydney Metro’s Barangaroo Station, the first new station in a ground-breaking metro project for Sydney CBD.
