State Library Victoria featured in Architecture Australia magazine
Respected historian explores the State Library Victoria Vision 2020 Redevelopment for Architecture Australia
The State Library Victoria Vision 2020 Redevelopment has been featured in the May/June edition of Architecture Australia, discussing the project in the lineage of the library’s rich architectural history.
The article, by respected architectural and urban form historian Conrad Hamann, paints a vivid picture of the library’s complex history, from its first day of operation in 1856 to the unveiling of his its most recent transformation, designed by Architectus in collaboration with Schmidt Hammer Lassen.
Hamann said “What marks this refurbishment is the architects’ willingness to go with the building’s idiosyncrasies and episodes. The work recognizes that large institutional buildings such as this carry inside them their own history and culture, and that refurbishment is as much a weaving, a negotiation, as an outright renewal.”
