Melbourne Design Week 2025: On Route

Can public transport do more for people? We’re hosting a free design talk as part of Melbourne Design Week to try and answer this question.

Spanning the scale of cities, states and countries, transport is often discussed through the lens of large-scale systems and numbers, overshadowing the complexities of designing spaces for diverse communities.

For this year’s Melbourne Design Week, Architectus in partnership with Fed Square and Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation will present ‘On Route’ – a conversation about transport at the scale of the individual, exploring the messiness that we are all well-acquainted with. The discussion will explore how perceptions of time, space, safety, and equitable access are affected by the different scales people traverse when they use transport.

Building on the ideas from the last two MDW events: ‘Underpass’, and ‘Back of House’ – the idea for the talk comes from the revelation that we can impact our environment as much as it impacts us. The speaker line-up includes emerging thought leaders from the fields of architecture, urban design and their adjacent fields, to question our relationship with transport in its many forms, and the spaces on which it depends.

Melbourne Design Week is an initiative of the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria. It is Australia’s largest and leading annual design festival and takes place from 15-25 May 2025.
