FASS opens for 2019 academic year

Architectus has designed the University of Sydney’s new Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences building – the first new build for the Faculty since its founding in 1852.

Opened for the 2019 academic year, Architectus’ design for the new teaching and learning facility and extensive refurbishment of the heritage R.D. Watt Building, responds to the University’s “Wingara Mura” Strategy, expressing a deep connection with its former landscape, broader campus context and strong cultural connection.

Principal, Jeremy Deale said “It was vital to create a modern facility that both compliments the neighbouring heritage listed buildings, whilst providing a new and innovative building.”

Working in unison to contrast the old and new, a sophisticated curtain wall with dynamic bronze-coloured optical effect defines the new facility and is a contemporary reference to campus stone and masonry materiality.

The R.D. Watt Building, originally the home of the Faculty of Agriculture, was rejuvenated and integrated into the 21st century facility through a restrained refurbishment that connects century old pedagogy with contemporary teaching and learning practice.
