Australian Institute of Architects Life Fellows honoured in Brisbane

John Grealy and Peter Skinner honoured by the Australian Institute of Architects

Architectus Brisbane’s Founding Director, John Grealy, and Head of Research, Peter Skinner, were each admitted as Life Fellows of the Australian Institute of Architects this week. Life Fellowship is the highest membership honour conferred by the institute and recognises notable contribution to the advancement of the profession. John and Peter were separately presented with Life Fellowship at the 2017 AIA President’s Dinner, attended by Queensland’s Deputy Premier and Brisbane’s Lord Mayor among many distinguished guests.

John Grealy LFRAIA was honoured “in recognition of his enormous contribution to Australian Architecture”. His role in the delivery of some of Brisbane’s most outstanding public buildings was highlighted in his citation. John was lead designer for the Commonwealth Law Courts in Brisbane and the Neville Bonner Building and a major contributor to the design teams for Brisbane’s Domestic Airport Terminal, Queensland’s Gallery of Modern Art and the QEII Courts of Law.  John’s most recent major project, the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, is due to open within months. In the presentation of this award, John’s quiet humility and his generous, inclusive and collaborative working method was highly praised.

Australian Institute of Architects Life Fellows honoured in Brisbane

Peter Skinner LFRAIA was recognised for his contribution to architectural teaching, practice, and service over 35 years. His academic career included roles as Head of Department and Professor of Architecture at the University of Queensland. Within the profession he is known for his critical writing and his architectural design, including the award-winning St Lucia House. Peter’s contributions to the Institute of Architects were acknowledged, including his roles as Chapter and National Councillor, State President, Queensland Architecture Awards Director and co-director of the 2012 National Architecture Conference in Brisbane.

Architectus Design Director, Elizabeth Watson-Brown LFRAIA, was the first to congratulate her colleagues on the night. Elizabeth was elevated to Life Fellowship herself in 2011 for her notable contributions to architectural design and to the profession.

In a profession that often can be highly competitive, the recognition by one’s peers and colleagues is very special. Our new Life Fellows are proud but humbled by the honour.
