A Modernist icon
renewed: the many lives
of 620 Wickham Street

Originally designed by influential Modernist architect Karl Langer in 1953, West’s Furniture Showroom at 620 Wickham Street stood as a beacon of architectural innovation in Brisbane.

Decades of neglect nearly erased this iconic structure, but a meticulous restoration in 2009 brought it back to life, celebrating Langer’s vision and ensuring its place in Brisbane’s architectural heritage.

This national award-winning building is set to start another new chapter as the headquarters for the Queensland Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects, with design led by Lineburg Wang and supported by Architectus.

Before it starts an exciting new life, we’re looking back on the building’s rich, eventful history – and our Heritage team’s involvement in its evolution.

The showroom at 620 Wickham Street was a Mid-Century Modern standout in Brisbane.

Langer’s landmark design (including a sunny rooftop space) was compromised over the years by modifications that obscured the building’s original Modernist features, including an angled shopfront, serpentine pond, and skylights.

In the 2009 renovation, the team reinstated key elements that exemplify Langer’s approach to subtropical Modernism: the interplay of light, nature, and structure. These included the skylights and the serpentine pond.

The restoration not only earned the building state heritage listing but also garnered a National Heritage Award, recognising the importance of adaptive reuse in preserving architectural icons.

The next chapter for 620 Wickham

The team revitalising the building for the Australian Institute of Architects new Queensland’s HQ is set to draw on Langer’s original vision while addressing contemporary needs such as accessibility and functionality.

A new interior fit out, rooftop terrace, rear ‘sunken pavilion’ and laneway entrance will add to the building’s dynamic new life.

A fitting home for the AIA’s work furthering our profession in Queensland, the project reflects the seamless integration of heritage conservation and modern functionality, like the restoration that preceded it. The outcome will ensure 620 Wickham Street continues to inspire excellence in design.
