Australia’s first demountable, bamboo partition system

When an architect becomes their own client, the opportunity to experiment with next-generation materials is unsurprisingly too good to pass up.

Principal Troy King, who led the design of our new Brisbane studio, set out to create an environment for his colleagues that would not only foster creativity but also walk-the-walk of our firm’s values.

Troy has been working with Assemble Studio, which designs and manufactures Australia’s first and only bamboo demountable partition system for internal glazing. They’re building a future where biodegradable buildings could be closer than we think.

As Australia faces increasing pressure on its native forest logging, bamboo offers a much-needed additional or even alternative source. It can help supply the demand for timber, valued in our industry for its low embodied carbon properties.

Famously, bamboo’s growing speed outpaces traditional timbers. It can self-regenerate, so it doesn’t require replanting. These qualities make for a sustainable, scalable approach to forestry.

Bamboo can store up to 4x more CO2 and can produce 35% more oxygen than traditional timbers” – Tyrone, Director Assemble Studio

Assemble’s modular and circular products can be disassembled and re-used, making a recyclable alternative to wasteful office fit outs. One day biodegradable buildings might be common place.

Our Brisbane studio is not only a place where creativity can flourish. It’s also a living lab where clients and collaborators can see and experience the next generation of our built world – one that is circular and sustainable.
