Canberra Light Rail, Stage 1 Gunghalin to Civic

Canberra Light Rail, Stage 1 Gunghalin to Civic

Architectus provided urban design, architecture and landscape design services for the winning consortium, Canberra Metro, selected to deliver, maintain and operate the first stage of Canberra’s light rail.

Comprising a 12km light rail link from Gungahlin in Canberra’s north to the central business district, Civic, the network includes 13 stops, depot and stabling yard, and provides commuters with a dedicated and reliable public transport service into Canberra’s commercial and retail centre.

Through working closely with the Canberra Metro Consortium team, Transport Canberra and the National Capital Authority, Architectus developed a design that met and exceeded the expectations of the brief, which called for a high-quality, attractive and comfortable light rail system that provides an uplifting civic presence and legacy for future generations.

Responding to the context, climate and cultural landscape of the broader Canberra-region, Architectus’ design integrates the landscape, architecture and system design to uplift the rail corridor and broader precincts from Gungahlin through Dickson to Civic. At Civic, a wider contextual design was conceived to include the broader public domain of the adjacent Sydney and Melbourne buildings.

Stop canopies refer to the boulevard tree canopy; representing an abstraction of broad overhead canopy in roof canopy fractal geometry forms. This design continues at ground level with the urban design at Alinga Street; undulating and fractal forms of the canopy are reflected in the form and structure of landscape planting.

The integration of art within the stop design is important in defining the character of urban places along the corridor. Canberra artist Hannah Quinlivan has captured the rhythms of place within beautiful site-specific artworks; each unique to their individual context.
