6 Star Green Star Sunshine Coast University Hospital

24 August 2018

The Queensland Government’s $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital has become the largest public healthcare facility in Australia to achieve the building industry’s highest honour with a ‘6 star’ rating under the green star system for its design and operation.

The Architectus and HDR project adds this accolade to other awards and a growing reputation in the community as a centre for health and wellness. We are delighted that the local environment will also benefit from reduced energy use, water conservation, and reduced carbon emissions.

Sustainable design consultants Aurecon estimate the hospital’s predicted reduction in energy consumption to be at least 20 percent at full occupancy, with a 40 percent peak energy demand reduction compared to an equivalent facility.

The day to day experience of patients, staff and visitors reflects the environmental credentials of the hospital. The buildings are infused with local landscape, natural light, and open space capturing the relaxed architecture of the region.

Exemplar Health, a consortium comprised of Lendlease, Siemens and Capella Capital, in partnership with Queensland Health, targeted a four-star rating but by using innovative design and construction techniques have been able to position the regional hospital as a national leader in sustainable healthcare.
